Obani from Mombasa

Used throughout the world in ceremony and purification rituals, our hand gathered frankincense from the Horn of Africa is some of the finest available in the world. It is still collected as it has been for generations and remains an important means of support for many families.

Known as obani, in Kiswahili, a word that derives from the Arabic luban (oil) or olibanum (Oil of Lebanon), the resin of Somalia’s boswellia tree is burnt in beautiful Somali uud (perfume) burners for a variety of purposes. Many indigenous Africans of the coast, such as the 9 tribes of the Mijikenda, use obani to cleanse their villages, aid in the healing process of an ill family member, to purify their homes and to ‘reach out’ to their ancestors with whom they are always in close communication.

To use loose incense such as frankincense, simply fill a small ceramic bowl or dish with sand or salt. Place a charcoal piece on top and carefully light the edge. We find it easier to light the charcoal by holding it with tongs over a gas stove flame for about 30 seconds then transferring it to a bowl.

Put 1 or 2 pieces of frankincense on top of the charcoal. The resin will begin to smoke. The aroma is so nice you may be tempted to add more. Through experience we know this will result in smoking yourself out of your home. With aromatic resins, less is more.

The charcoal will continue burning for some time allowing you to add another piece or two of frankincense. When finished, let the charcoal round extinguish completely and the bowl or incense burner cool before you clean it and put it away for the next use.
